The value of support groups for survivors

Wings Support Group Testimonials, Survivors

One of the most challenging things about being a survivor of childhood sexual abuse is that survivors often feel like they are the only ones who have gone through this experience.

Wings therapist-facilitated, peer-led support groups offer adult survivors the chance to  learn how their lives have been impacted by this trauma and how they can move forward in new ways.

Hear directly from adult survivors on the power of joining a Wings Support Group:

Feeling less alone

“At first I didn’t believe I had the courage to make that first phone call to Wings.  Now… I see just how much courage I do possess.  There is no doubt in my mind that without Wings I would not have made this transition from hopeless victim.”

“This group is essential to my mental health and well-being. Before the group, I thought I was alone.”

“Wings has been a great support for me.  I have really appreciated that everyone is here to listen to me and they are not judging me because they understand what I have gone through as they have gone through the same things themselves.”

“In the Wings group I have made progress with problems that I stayed isolated with in the past.  It’s a group where I really feel a sense of belonging and safety.”

“Wings has been invaluable to my healing.  It’s a place where I can go to ‘unburden’ and share even the ‘worst’ of my life and self with others who will hear me and often love and accept me – no matter what.”

Supporting the healing journey

“Group is a great support system in my life.  I will keep coming back to work through all my issues.  For me it has been a Godsend.”

“Wings has been the single most effective tool I have had in trying to deal with the abuse I have experienced.  I have made huge strides in my recovery because of my Wings group.  I can’t say enough great things about Wings!”

“Wings has been invaluable to my healing.  It’s a place where I can go to ‘unburden’ and share even the ‘worst’ of my life and self with others who will hear me and often love and accept me – no matter what.”

“…when I tell the group about how the incest has damaged my self-esteem and affected every area of my life, the other group members understand the magnitude of the hurt, because they know it firsthand.  And the most amazing thing is that they believe me…Wings has given me a glimmer of hope that I will eventually feel like the incest doesn’t rule my life anymore.  I have hope that I can eventually feel ‘normal’.”

“Wings has assisted me in returning the responsibility to the abuser.  I’m learning to deal with life better and healthier.”

Building personal empowerment

“I have gone from feeling alone, afraid, and powerless to feeling supported, self-assured, and personally empowered.”

“The group has been key in my ongoing recovery.  It is one of the only safe places to work through the pain of childhood incest.”

“No matter what my mood is that day, I’m always glad I made it to the meeting.  Support, sisterhood / [brotherhood] / [personhood], no judgment calls, united.”

“I feel as if I am becoming more assertive.”
